The Apple Bytes Back

apple 2Can you imagine taking away a person’s cell phone these days without them having an anxiety attack? Many of our young people seem to have fallen under the spell of their phones and treat it like a best friend. The power of this technology is so profound that we scarcely have any idea what it is doing to our lives and our world today.I wish every person in the world could read this article. My reason for saying that is because it would be wonderful for people to have some idea about the real, spiritual meaning of this technology in our lives.  Sadly, it appears that few have any idea about the Biblical and prophetic role of technology and where all of this is going.

When the founders of Apple Computer, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, had a vision of a personal computer on everyone’s desk back in 1976, people probably thought they were a little crazy. Certainly no one ever dreamed that less than 40 years later there would be an Apple in everyone’s hand. The brand name “Apple” has probably become the most recognized symbol of technology in the world today making the founders and shareholders of Apple Computer incredibly wealthy.

Now if you look at the company’s logo, it is an apple with a bite taken out of it.  However that singular “bite” is not just any “bite.”  It actually is connected to another “byte” which is computer lingo for information storage. The first person to coin the phrase “byte” was Werner Buchholz in July 1956, while working on computer technology with IBM.  So the Apple logo cleverly takes us from a symbol of daily life that Steve Jobs liked to eating and consuming the information revolution.

What is simply astonishing is that virtually nobody gets what all of this is really about and what really has happened.  None of the founders of Apple Computer, the scientists at IBM, or anyone else seems to see the profound spiritual issues involved in what they helped to create.  This amazing technology has led us back to the Biblical story of Creation in the Garden of Eden.  Adam and Eve took a bite of the fruit, maybe an apple, and discovered the knowledge of good and evil, as well as sin and death.  Just as taking a bite of the fruit in the Garden led us away from the Lord, so too we are seeing the exact same pattern recurring again. This time technology has us bite into its bytes, be it mega, giga, or tera.  This new Tree of Knowledge has not only led us away from the Lord, but has also helped to enhance the lie in the Garden that we could be great on our own with our new knowledge... we could be as god.

Now the great problem in the Garden and today is that we weren’t created for amassing knowledge and information.  That is the lie, the deception.   The Lord created us to know Him. That is the knowledge that the Lord wants for us, a knowledge of Him.  A real relationship with the Lord and others is the goal of all knowledge.  Just having another terabyte of information about any subject does not satisfy a soul or give a deep peace that passes understanding. Knowledge alone, without relationships, leads toward pride and emptiness.

The Bible tells us in Colossians 2:3 that Jesus is the fullness and real meaning of all our wisdom and knowledge. Everything is about Him. Knowing the Lord Jesus Christ is what life is about. Everything else is just hardware, software, and data.
