Why Socialism Is Destined to Fail

Churchill-Quote-2I sat back this past week and watched the Democratic Presidential Debates. It seemed like every sound byte was another candidate talking about another promised giveaway program that seems to be meant to buy votes. Some of the candidates even wanted to give away money to people who were not citizens. Sadly, we are truly nearing the end of this Country as we know it.  Back in 1776, around the time of our Nation’s founding, a European historian, Alexander Fraser Tytler, published a work entitled, “The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Republic.”  In his work, Tytler made the following observation:

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising them the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over a loss of fiscal responsibility, always followed by a dictatorship. The average of the world's great civilizations before they decline has been 200 years. These nations have progressed in this sequence:
 From bondage to spiritual faith,
From spiritual faith to great courage,
 From courage to liberty,
 From liberty to abundance,
 From abundance to selfishness,
 From selfishness to complacency,
 From complacency to apathy,
 From apathy to dependency,
From dependency back again to bondage.

The above progression of decline, outlined by Tytler, follows our Country’s rise and fall from leaving the bondage of taxation without representation under the British Empire and King George III, all the way to the Democratic debates this past week. How ironic that President Obama’s father was a British Citizen from Kenya at the time of his birth. Somehow our Country is ending where it started.

One of the ways we see these issues unfolding today is the fact that we are now hearing the word, “socialism” frequently. People aren’t hiding it. In the debates this past week, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders calls himself a socialist and makes no apology. This would have been unheard of in America just a few years ago. While Senator Sanders is most likely not going to get the nomination because of the politics with front runner Hillary Clinton, he has been speaking in front of huge crowds of over 30,000 people at a time. It seems America has rapidly changed from “the land of the free and home of the brave” to the land of the “fair and just”…..whatever that means?

What people fail to see is why all socialism is doomed to fail. The reason is simple. Socialism is an attempt by humans to be as god and create a world of “fairness” and “justice” without any god in the picture. As a matter of fact, if you look at history you will find that anywhere socialism begins to rise, the Church begins to fall. That happened in Europe after World War II, and you see it happening to some extent now in America. When governments take responsibility for taking care of people, by creating the “Nanny State”, you don’t need God. The State ends up replacing the Lord with cradle to grave entitlements. People end up worshipping and serving their source of supply. No longer does the petition, “Give us this day our daily bread” from the “Lord’s Prayer” have any meaning. Caesar bakes the bread in this new world and gives it out as the leaders see fit.

The late Christian theologian and philosopher, Dr. Francis Schaeffer saw socialism as a Christian heresy. It looked for a new, redeemed world of sharing and caring, but it ignored the reality of sin and the need for a Savior. Socialism has never worked because it ignores this reality of fallen, human nature. As the former Prime Minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher, was fond of saying, “socialism is a wonderful idea until you run out of other people’s money.” With our Nation and many nations in Europe on the verge of bankruptcy and financial collapse, you realize Prime Minster Thatcher was right.

In this time of economic and social confusion, the Bible tells us where all of this is going to end up. The growing socialism in America and Europe is leading us into the arms of the Antichrist…..the Last Socialist.  The Antichrist will seemingly be the answer to the world’s problems with his promised social justice and fairness for all, but it will all fall down around him as the Lord Jesus Christ returns. As we watch this drama unfolding before our eyes, it is a powerful reminder that we all need a Savior, not another pandering politician. Let’s all run to Jesus and find His saving provision for our lives today.
