As we continue to watch the recent deadly tensions in Israel between the Israelis and the Palestinians over the Land and control of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, most people fail to see the profound issues that are under way. From Presidents to Popes, no one seems to have found any lasting answer about what to do. Finding a lasting peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis has turned into the most vexing political and spiritual problem in history.
At the heart of this conflict is the belief that the Israelis are occupying lands that belonged to the Palestinians before the State of Israel was reborn in 1948. The Israelis are seen by many as a group of people who stole the land from its rightful owners and continue to take more and more of it through their growing settlements. In addition to the land, there is also a spiritual issue at work as well on an even deeper level. The majority of Palestinians are Muslims and believe Jerusalem to be the 3rd holiest city to Islam after Mecca and Medina. This belief has led to charges that the Israelis are trying to steal the Temple Mount and Jerusalem away from them.
In a way, what is going on in Israel today is two mothers fighting over the same baby. Both mothers, the Israelis and the Palestinians, claim the Land of Israel and Jerusalem as their baby and seem to be ready to do anything to make that child their own. These two moms have been fighting over this child so long now that it seems the ONLY solution to them, and much of the world, would be to cut the baby in two…..to divide the Land. The world is calling that answer the “Two State Solution.” This “Two State Solution” is being supported by almost everyone from President Obama to the Pope, major world leaders and the United Nations. However, it just seems that the details of “cutting the baby in two” are so difficult to work out that nobody seems to know when it will ever happen. After all, how do you cut a baby in two and expect it to live for long?
Incredibly, what has been virtually missed by the entire world today is the fact that this issue was already discussed and solved almost 3000 years ago by King Solomon in I Kings 3:16-28. The Bible tells us that it took Solomon’s great wisdom to solve an impossible problem that came up between two mothers that fought over the same baby. One of the mother’s baby had died, so she stole a baby from another mother and claimed it for her own. The mothers brought this fight over the same child before Solomon for a solution. Solomon’s wise ruling was that the baby should be cut in two. In his wisdom, Solomon knew that the real mother would give up her child to the other mother so it could live. Sadly, the other mother was actually willing to have the child cut in two because she didn’t really care about it. Solomon’s wisdom was able to find the real mother and he gave her the child…..a happy ending. Solomon’s amazing solution to this vexing problem resulted in awe and wonder for his reign as the King of Peace.
What started out as an amazing story of wisdom from the days of Solomon has turned into an astonishing prophecy about the current conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians over the same Baby…..the Land of Israel. It is very clear in this battle that the Palestinians are more than glad to cut the baby in two because the Land never belonged to them. They don’t love the Land with a maternal instinct that reflects true ownership. They have rejected citizenship in Israel when it was offered to them. They have worked hard to divide the Land from the beginning through the “Two State Solution.” They have pushed this agenda over and over through the media, sympathetic world leaders and the United Nations. Their agenda seems to be succeeding.
Meanwhile, Israel loves the Land because it belongs to her. It was given to her through her ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, by the Lord Himself over 4000 years ago as recorded in Genesis 15. Israel has been willing, however reluctantly, to give up her rights over the Land so there can be peace with the Palestinians. The true mother wants her child to live in a world of peace, not war.
As we draw closer to the culmination of the Lord’s plan for His Land and His people, we must come to realize that ONLY the wisdom of a Greater Solomon can solve this issue between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Greater Solomon according to Matthew 12:42. One day soon the Land will not be divided anymore, but whole forever under our Lord’s reign as the Prince of Peace. May we all long for that day to arrive, and continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
