Do We Need a Billionaire Bunker?

Written by Jeff Carlson on .

Atomic BombIn the last few years, there has been a growing fear of the future by many. People are worried about nuclear wars, terrorists, extremist governments, natural disasters, worldwide debt, and a hundred other things. As conditions seem to get worse, a few people are in a state of preparation to weather the possible coming storms. Some are buying guns, gold, silver and storing away food and survival supplies. As a matter of fact, there is even a show on the National Geographic Channel now called “Doomsday Preppers” that addresses these very issues.

This week a news story came out that brought all these fears and preparations to a focus. There is a billionaire in the Czech Republic that is currently building an incredible, luxury bunker to weather these possible storms. The bunker is called “The Oppidum.” Residents can enter the shelter by descending through a secret corridor to the bunker, sealing it with a blast door in less than a minute. The bunker is equipped with every possible convenience and is the ultimate way to be ready for anything…. including the end of the world. Unfortunately for most of us, only a billionaire has the money to build something like it, leaving the rest of us a little vulnerable.

Bunkers like this are being built all over the world today, some big and some very small. Meanwhile, gun sales in America have skyrocketed. There have been a growing number of ads in the media that encourage people to buy gold, silver, food and survival supplies. The one thing that seems to be a common denominator for all of this “prepping” is a fear of something terrible coming our way. Are these people right or just crazy? And if they are right on any level, what should we be doing about it as the Lord’s people?

The answer to this question is at the heart of the Bible’s message. The world is NOT coming to an end. The Bible clearly teaches that the Lord Jesus Christ will return to STOP this feared end from coming. That is Good News! Without the Lord’s return there could only be an end. With His return there could only be a forever future. The message the Lord is sending the world today is that we cannot save ourselves from sin, only the Lord can do that. Human beings cannot stop what sin produces and as a result we cannot stop the coming wars and our propensity to entirely destroy the beautiful world the Lord created for us.

The Lord didn’t create nuclear weapons, wars, terrorism, hate, murder and evil. We did! The Lord is allowing us to see what happens to a world when the Lord is pushed away and we take over and try to run the world without Him. People are “prepping” today because when we attempt to run things without the Lord everything falls apart. The Lord Jesus told His disciples that the world would destroy itself without His gracious return which will stop it from happening, according to Matthew 24:21-22.

The Bible tells us that the day is coming when people are going to be looking for a “doomsday bunker” to find shelter from the storm. However, the shelter they are seeking is a way to hide from God Himself and His wrath against sin (Revelation 6:15-17).  One day soon, the world will be desperate to find a way to escape God’s justice and judgment for sin. The Lord cannot delay this judgment forever. The Day of the Lord’s judgment surely will come one day. If the Lord didn’t bring this needed justice to this world, He simply wouldn’t be God.

What everyone needs today is not a bunker; we need a Savior. We need a place of shelter and refuge from the coming judgment for sin. The Apostle Paul tells the Church in I Thessalonians1:10 that the Gospel is the message of God’s love and the escape from the coming wrath. People are left with a sobering choice between the Lord’s shelter and protection or being left to face the need for a “doomsday bunker” from the wrath of God. That same truth is wonderfully conveyed by David in Psalm 27:5, who wrote that the Lord would shelter him in the day of trouble. The Lord has always been the shelter we need for any coming storm.

As the Lord’s return nears, the number of people “prepping” will increase. They go together. I am not a “prepper coach.” I am a pastor. I don’t give out such advice to anyone. However, the best preparation any of us can make is to be sure that we know the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and are trusting in Him as our Rock, Refuge and Fortress from the coming storm. No matter how the future unfolds, no one who puts their trust in Him will ever be disappointed. No “billionaire bunker” can save anyone from sin. The ONLY way we can escape the coming storms is through the Cross and the “grace bunker” that the Lord has provided for us when the Day of Judgment arrives.
