One of the most incredible things to watch today is the changing role of Donald Trump as President. When Donald Trump first announced his desire to be President, it was considered a "bad joke" by many people. More recently the laughter has died down. Not only did Donald Trump become President against impossible odds, but his first address to a joint session of Congress this past Tuesday surprised many. Some people simply could not believe that President Trump's speech sounded "Presidential." In slightly over an hour, President Trump delivered one of the more powerful, substantive and effective speeches to the Nation in recent memory. People from all political persuasions were shocked at how well the speech came across. Simply put, something is underway now that is surprising almost everyone, except the Lord of glory that planned it all for His purposes and our good.
Anytime you see the emergence of a new and transformational leader on the world stage, you can be sure the Lord is at work for His purposes and that BIG things are underway in His Kingdom. The Prophet Daniel said in Daniel 2:21,
Praise be to the name of the Lord for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
There is no question that President Trump is such a world leader and that his influence and role in history is going to be greater than anyone realizes at the present time. That has already happened in just a few weeks. None of us can even begin to imagine what his influence will be over the next 4-8 years, should he remain in office.
When assessing world leaders, the KEY issue to discern is how such leaders will influence and affect the Lord's purposes for the Jews, Israel and His redemptive plan for the nations. That is where we need to focus our attention. A great example of this Biblical principle is seen in God's choice of a Pharaoh during the time of the patriarch Joseph. The Lord used Pharaoh to catapult Joseph to the 2nd most powerful man in Egypt, next to the Pharaoh himself according to Genesis 41:43-44. And yet, generations later, another Pharaoh was put into power that cursed Israel (Exodus 1:8-10). That new Pharaoh was used to create the conflict and drama necessary that would lead to the rise of Moses and the Exodus story of Israel's journey to the Promised Land.
Other great examples of this divine pattern of chosen leadership are seen in the return of the Lord's people back to Israel after the Babylonian Captivity. Leaders such as Cyrus, King of Persia, during the days of Ezra in Ezra 1:1-4, and King Artaxerxes of Babylon in Nehemiah 2:1-10, during the days of Nehemiah, show a clear and unmistakable hand of the Lord at every level. The Bible never leaves us in doubt that all leaders, kings, queens and powerful people in history are simply instruments of the Lord to accomplish His everlasting purposes. All of these truths ultimately came together during the trial of the Lord Jesus Christ, when our Lord stood before the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate He said in John 19:11,
You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.
Our Lord reminds Pilate that no one has any power to do anything in leadership unless the Lord allows it, plans it and administers it. Pilate was most likely stunned by our Lord's words to him, but that statement regarding authority and power rings as true today and ever.
We also see this exact story being played out in American history as well. When President Harry Truman was considering what to do with the possible new state of Israel, few ever saw him as President in his earlier years. Truman had been considered a complete political unknown as Vice President when he took office following President Roosevelt's death in 1945. When the issue of Israel's statehood came up two years later in 1947, Truman turned out to be a surprising maverick and went against his own cabinet leaders, including then Secretary of State George Marshall. Truman made the controversial decision to support Israel's right to exist and the United States became the first world power to acknowledge that fact in May 1948 to the shock of many. But Lord had chosen Truman; in the same way He chose Cyrus of Persia and Artaxerxes of Babylon, to accomplish His Biblical and redemptive purposes for Israel and the entire world.
What happened with President Truman has surely continued through every successive American President. Surely the Lord's amazing control of all leadership and world events will continue with President Trump. Neither the media, politicians nor any political pundit has ever really considered in a serious way that the Lord is really behind everything going on today. You virtually never hear such things discussed. The world just can't seem to fathom that the Lord has His hands on our political affairs in any clear way. And while many profess to "believe in god," they simply refuse to even discuss His ordering of world events and leaders as a possibility.
As a result, few seem willing to discuss that President Trump's shocking election, strong support for Israel, and his friendship with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, along with having a beloved daughter that converted to Judaism after marrying a Jew, are somehow a part of the Lord's hand at work. The idea that people really don't make any decisions in life outside of the Lord's plan and purposes is simply beyond belief.
As we look at the prophetic purposes that are unfolding before our eyes, it is impossible to NOT see the hand of the Lord at work. There is no other way to explain President Trump. As time unfolds, it will be increasing clear that President Trump is a KEY person fulfilling the Lord's purposes for Israel, America and the world. President Trump, like President Truman before him, came "out of nowhere" and yet both men have been directed and guided by the Lord. Whatever their awareness of their mission or themselves, both men are ultimately serving our Lord and His awesome, sovereign purposes for each of us in the Lord Jesus Christ. Now that is a Lord we can worship and serve with all our heart. That fact is truly at the heart of all the Good News in the Bible and life !!!
