Jesus and Einstein

einstienOn this Resurrection Weekend, Christians all over the world will be celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ from the grave. The Christian Faith rises and falls on an Empty Tomb as the Apostle Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 15:14. However, the Resurrection of Christ is much more than just an article of faith, it is good science.

For many people the Resurrection rests on nothing more than the Gospel narratives that the Tomb was empty and the faith of the apostles. This seeming lack of objective, empirical evidence has led to a huge amount of doubt, skepticism and outright unbelief. For many people the Resurrection doesn’t make sense and violates the laws of nature and science itself. I have read numerous articles, books and heard from many people who simply didn’t really believe in the Resurrection for a variety of logical reasons born from our modern, scientific age.

The fact of the matter is that the Resurrection makes good sense, it is even scientific. We couldn’t have known that until the 20th century when Albert Einstein wrote the most famous scientific equation in history, E=mc2. The equation tells us that mass can turn into energy and energy can turn into mass. In other words, an apple or a piece of wood…stuff…mass is just another form of energy in a visible form. If I haven’t lost anybody, this is the foundation of nuclear energy and even bombs. The mass of uranium or some other element can turn into energy. You might say the mass can disappear and convert itself to a huge amount of energy. Everybody in the world accepts that reality as a scientific fact. It is not an article of faith from a crazy group of nuclear scientists.

Einstein and the modern scientific world are telling us that even a human body could turn into energy. Dare I say a human body could resurrect and pass through a rock tomb the way heat leaves a house in Michigan during a cold winter’s day? When you go down this road the whole idea of resurrection seems to be more an article of scientific fact than just the faith of a few simple folks on Easter Sunday.

What is so extraordinary on this Easter weekend is the fact that the Christian Faith also believes Jesus is God, not just that He rose again from the dead. Jesus never hesitated to tell the world He was God, the Great I AM from the Old Testament, in many places such as John 8:58. In other words, Jesus also created the Universe and started the Big Bang or Beginning in Genesis 1:1 by turning His plan, will or energy to create into mass.

I also find it amazing that Einstein was not only perhaps the greatest scientist in history, but a Jew that was asked at one time to be the President of Israel, the only nation in history that has ever resurrected from the dead in May of 1948. So between Jesus and Einstein it seems there is a great story that needs to be told today that the world isn’t hearing... and it is scientific after all. Jesus rose again from the dead at His own Hand as He said in the John 2:19. Jesus also created Einstein and resurrected Israel to tell His story of God’s love and redemption for a fallen world.

So the next time you hear someone say the Resurrection is just an article of faith, tell them the rest of the story. Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed!!!
