Bowing Down to the Image

2016If you’re like me, you may already be weary of another round of the race for the presidency. Every week now, new potential contenders are announcing their campaign for the White House in 2016. And yet, it seems harder and harder each political cycle to get excited about anyone because we end up so disappointed with the results of these leaders once they are elected. We want things to change, but we seem to keep making the same mistakes over and over. It seems we have truly found the definition of political insanity and it is taking a heavy toll on our lives.

The reason why we end up so disappointed with things is that we haven’t learned anything from the first campaign in history. Do you remember it? It took place in the Garden of Eden. There were two candidates vying for humanity’s attention or vote. The Lord gave people everything we needed and the devil just gave us the image of something we wanted. Humanity saw that the fruit of the tree was “pleasing to the eye” and things haven’t been the same since. The image seemed to carry the day then...and now. Reality and the rest of the story didn’t matter. All that seemed to matter was that the image was pleasing and felt good to our view of life.

What happened in the Garden is lost on our world today, but it is the storyline that is directing everything. For most people, the only thing that matters is the image. We live in a world where pictures, videos, public relations, focus groups, smiling promises, charm, and false hopes are substitutes for reality, true love, meaning, and ultimately the Lord Himself.

One of the great and yet sad images of such a culture is found in Daniel 3. I would encourage everyone to read this passage. It is the story of a politician who makes an image of himself and demands that everyone bow down and worship it on pain of death. Nothing has changed. That Bible story, written 2500 years ago, is an amazing picture of where we are today and where our world is heading tonight.

You see, we’re still in the Garden with a choice set before or death...reality or image...God or the devil. What surprises people about the images they follow and the candidates they support is how the real story ends. People are shocked to find out that their images and candidates can and will betray them. We are seeing that before our eyes in the American political enterprise today and it is getting worse each election cycle. The sobering reality to our false images is the fact the Bible tells us the last candidate vying for human support and votes will be the Antichrist. His coming is near. Do you sense that? Do you see it coming? It’s not a new story. It’s how things started and of course how they will end.

May all of us be wise and discerning at this time as we run into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ and find in Him the reality and truth of what our life is all about.
