Scapegoat Nation

goat2Have you ever blamed someone for anything that might not have been their fault? We all have done it. Welcome to the world of scapegoating. When we face problems in life it is often easier to blame someone else than to look at our part in the issue. It is easier blaming family members. It is easily blaming politicians. It is easier blaming the economy. It is easier blaming the pastor. Now that’s one I know all about. People just can’t handle blaming themselves or working out their part. The “blame game” is the main way many seem to handle life. Can you imagine people actually taking responsibility for their own sins? It almost sounds too good to be true.

The Gospel, or Good News, in the Bible is that the Lord Himself took responsibility for all our sins. The Lord Jesus didn’t have any sin at all. And yet, the Lord of Creation chose to exchange His innocence for our guilt. This glorious gift of grace was seen on the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16. On this special day, a scapegoat was chosen by lot and sent into the wilderness to remove the people’s sins.

The guilty Nation was forgiven by a gracious Lord. This amazing story was ultimately fulfilled when the same Nation chose to crucify Jesus and set Barabbas free in the Gospels. Pontius Pilate let the crowd cast lots of who would die and who would live.

The world is still trying to blame others for their sin. Sadly, few will put their sin on Jesus and find true grace, real freedom, and life eternal. The latest scapegoating being done in the world is not toward individuals, but an entire Nation. The Nation chosen to be the world’s scapegoat today is the Nation of Israel. What a coincidence that the Nation given the scapegoat principle by the Lord is now being scapegoated. Amazing!!!

Ever since the Lord’s victory over the grave through the Resurrection, the Jews and ultimately the Nation of Israel, starting in 1948, have become the world’s scapegoat. They are blamed for everything from the Black Plague in medieval Europe to Middle East wars and high gasoline prices. Hitler was the most noticeable person to scapegoat the Jews with his virulent anti-Semitism that resulted in their murder during the Holocaust. And yet, from the day the Nation was re-established in 1948 to this very day, the Jews and Israel are once again the focus of the world’s search for a scapegoat.

It is simply amazing to watch it going on. According to Wikipedia, “As of 2013, Israel had been condemned in 45 resolutions by United Nations Human Rights Council since its creation in 2006—the Council had resolved almost more resolutions condemning Israel than on the rest of the world combined.” Not only has the United Nation made Israel a world scapegoat for others, but even the current Obama Administration has joined in this effort. President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry are convinced the problems with Iran, the Middle East and the world in general are connected to Israel. They do not hesitate to say this publicly. If only Israel would stop sinning against the world, so they say, the world would be a wonderful place and have that elusive peace we all desire.

There is only one scapegoat that will bring us peace and His Name is Jesus. Blaming others and even Israel will never solve anything. Let’s rejoice we have a scapegoat and Heaven is our home. We are forgiven, redeemed people and on our way to the New Jerusalem.
