Jesus on Unity and Division in America

Christians as trash-2Well, the midterm election drama is over for now and the results confirm what everyone knows about our Nation. We are a deeply divided Nation, more than people know. It seems clear that our Nation is going to be in an ongoing political war for the foreseeable future. And while most of us are already weary of this division, the worst is yet to come. You see the real division in America has never been about Red States or Blue States, or the many issues that supposedly are dividing us from immigration and race to abortion. Those many issues are just symptoms of a much deeper topic that is rarely discussed today that is spiritual in nature.

You see the only issue that ever causes division in any family or nation is how to deal with the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. So, if we were able "connect the dots" behind all our political battles they would all end up at Jesus' feet because He is the Lord and God of this world. In speaking about division in life our Lord said in Matthew 10:34-36,
Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man's enemies will be the members of his own household.
Sadly, our Lord's words are coming to pass before our eyes in countless American families. It ends up that our Lord, not politics or anything else, is the greatest source of division in life. As an example, it is not uncommon to hear stories of family members today that will not even stay with certain family members when visiting from out of state because they voted for President Trump. But the real issue that is causing this division is not political but spiritual in nature. Ultimately this division deals with family members that openly reject the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior. I know this to be true because it has happened in my own extended family. As a result, politics are never just about politics. The real issues and causes behind this division are always spiritual and deals with how we respond to the Lord Jesus.

Another example of what is going on today is seen in the picture displayed in this article. The picture shows a fake sign that was put up in New York City by people pretending to be City officials. The sign shows a woman wearing a Trump hat and carrying a Bible. The sign encourages people to "Keep NYC Trash Free." The message of the fake sign couldn't be clearer. President Trump and his Bible carrying supporters are trash that should be removed. But the ultimate goal of the sign was not just political but spiritual because it is designed to connect a hated politician to Christians and ultimately the Lord.

Now such a hateful sign might be seen by some as being on the "fringe" of political discourse, but that would not be correct. The people in New York City that put up that sign reflect the feelings of millions of progressives in our Nation that have a deep spiritual alienation with Christians and the Lord, not just a political leader. One of these people is former Vice President Joe Biden who recently attacked President Trump and his supporters in a speech according to a Washington Times article,
Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden assailed President Trump's supporters during a speech Saturday at the annual Human Rights Campaign dinner in Washington, lamenting that "virulent people" and the "dregs of society" still had a friend in the White House. Mr. Biden told an enthusiastic crowd of LGBTQ rights advocates that social conservatives at home and abroad who used religion or culture as a "license to discriminate" were committing a "crime" of prejudice.
Based on Vice President Biden's comments, it seems that Christians are increasing being seen as not just the "dregs of society," but a class of people who are guilty of committing "crime" against our society. If a growing number of people actually believe such things, the real question of the hour would have to be how long such Christian "criminals" will be allowed to live without the power of the State being used against them in some way. And so once again, as we peel back the rhetoric of Vice President Biden's recent speech, we realize that this attack is spiritual in nature and that Christians and the Lord are the ultimate target of his political rhetoric.

What seems to be lost in this hour is that the only battle that has ever gone on is against the Lord and His people. This battle has been hidden throughout the course of history and started with Cain attacking and killing Abel in Genesis 4. It is the same spiritual battle playing itself out today in our families, on the streets of New York City and in our political divisions. Only the historical context and names have been changed. In the end, politics are just a distraction from what is really going on in life as people turn away and reject the Lord Jesus Christ.

It is interesting that just as we are seeing Christians coming under increasing political attacks, we are also seeing a rising antisemitism around the world directed toward Jews and Israel. The recent massacre at a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh, the first in American history, is somehow connected to this heightened political division. The synagogue shooter was a rabid anti-Semite that shouted "All Jews must die!" during his rampage. It was later discovered that he harbored a great hatred toward President Trump, believing him to be controlled by the Jews. Once again, politics and this rising violence are only hiding the deeper battles that arise when people reject the Lord.

For a nation that has a national motto on its money of "In God We Trust," people must be starting to see that we have lost our way. And yet, the process of removing God from our society has been going on for a generation or so now one court battle and political election at a time. We are now seeing the bitter fruit of what happens when God is being replaced by government. Government is no longer seen by many as a servant of God. For some, government is now becoming a god, and this fact is clearly established with the growing interest in socialism, especially among the young. Government is increasingly being seen by many as their provider and protector as opposed to the Lord. Anyone standing in the way of this transfer of power from God to government is now the subject of vicious attacks in the media and by vocal progressive politicians that seem bent on gaining more and more power for themselves.

So, it turns out that all of this national political division is easily explained because it still comes down to the simple story found at the foot of the Cross. Our Lord was crucified in the middle of two criminals (Luke 23:33). One of the criminals accepted Him, the other mocked and rejected Him. Jesus is and always has been the Person that divides the world into two groups, saved and lost. This spiritual division that started with Cain and Abel in the Garden will continue to the final judgment of the sheep and goats spoken of in Matthew 25:31-46 when the Lord Jesus Christ returns.

If there was ever a time to proclaim the Gospel it is now. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can heal our divisions and bring about the political, personal and spiritual unity we all long for tonight. Our Nation will never heal our problems and pains with politics alone, Red or Blue. Each of us needs to realize afresh that people need a Savior, not another election that seeks yet more power for some political party. Without this recognition by our politicians and preachers we will never find our way out of this current national crisis and political mess. It is time to stand up for Jesus and proclaim Him as Lord of all. It is time for every Christian to renew our first love for the Lord Jesus Christ. It is time for every Christian to cry out to the Lord for mercy for our Nation. It is time for all of us to come together and find the unity from our divisions at the foot of the Cross. May it be so to the glory of God. Amen.
