What Makes God Laugh in Heaven?

Psalm 37.12-13If you have paid any attention to our recent Presidential election held on November 3, it is increasingly clear that America is at a defining moment in our history. And what will be a defining moment in American history will also be a defining moment in world history. Everybody knows it, whatever our political views. In case you missed it right now, politicians and the media from around the world have already "crowned" their new leader, even though none of the contested states have settled or certified their votes in an official way. The world is being told we need to "move on" and embrace a "new agenda" for the future of the world. However, this global, media agenda to move America on is spiritual in nature not political. That is true because politics are always but a cover or pretext for a spiritual agenda in the Bible that is not new but was here long ago.

Psalm 2 was written about 3000 years ago in Israel. It outlines a prophetic attitude of the nations of the world against God and His King, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Psalm tells us that in the future, nations will actually plot and conspire against God's rule over the world. Here the nations are furious that God would try to stop anything they want to do as we hear in verses 1-6,
Why do the nations conspire, and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
"Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles."
The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
"I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain."
But what is remarkable about this section of Psalm 2 is the Lord's reaction to their plans. The Bible tells us that God sits in Heaven and laughs at them because the idea that the world God created can stop the Creator Himself and His plans is beyond insanity. But multitudes believe it! The idea that a few people's political and spiritual schemes can stop a plan God had in His mind from eternity past is beyond silly...it is laughable in a tragic way. As an example, imagine for a moment a 5-year-old child trying to stop the Sun from shining with a squirt gun. Just imagine a crowd watching that child squirting away at the Sun and mad that the Sun didn't stop shining. Everyone would be laughing at the silly idea in the mind of the child. After all, how else could you describe such a silly, childish idea? But eventually reality would show up and the child would run out of water, the Sun would keep shining and the child would give up those laughable plans and move on. All of us have had some silly ideas ourselves about what we could do on our own, only to give them up later when reality showed up and we moved on. We call that maturity life.

However, in Psalm 2 we get no sense that the nations are ready to give up their silly plans to run things on their own and/or to try stopping the Son from shining. Remarkably, the context of this Psalm must be speaking to the end of this present age because all the nations of the world have never really been together planning such silly things until AFTER World War II as the United Nations began to form in 1945. It would not have been possible for the nations to meet, conspire and plan anything beforehand because they were not together. How incredible then that the globalists today are excited and hopeful that this recent election may now make it possible for America to leave our "silly" nationalistic thinking behind and rejoin the world's global agenda of controlling things like our climate through the Paris Climate Accord. These movements, along with other delusional, globalist strategies are seen as a key to creating world unity, peace and love. But instead of being in touch with reality, such thinking is rapidly seducing people toward some humanist future that openly defies God, that will never be realized and will end in a total nightmare. How could it be any different? Without God in the picture how could anything go or end well? And yet, this current, post-election euphoria has convinced many they now have an "open door" to finding heaven on earth for the first time!

But like most attempts at finding heaven on earth, there is a little problem here. Everybody has forgotten Jesus, the Real King and Lord of the world. Psalm 2 tells goes on to tell us that people are really constantly conspiring and plotting to get rid of Jesus and taking over His rightful throne. Jesus has already been installed on Zion or Jerusalem in the heart and mind of God. The world already has a King, so those decisions are technically already over. You might say the real election is over and Jesus won in a landslide of 100% to 0! But the nations have no interest in Jesus running anything. You see God's King and Messiah gets in people's way. Apparently, the current nations and many of those that just voted in our elections may not have gotten the memo that there is a loving and just God that has always ruled the world from the beginning. They will one day soon.

Now this foolish attempt to take over and conspire against Jesus as the True King and run the world without Him is again not new. Of course, it all started in the Garden back in Genesis 3 with the scheme of the serpent to steal God's rule and convince humanity they could rule...they could be as god. That opening battle in Genesis reached its fullness when our Lord entered the world as one of us to save us from that original lie in the Garden. That lie had been exposed in history through untold human suffering created by humanity running the world that eventually required a Flood to stop it. As our Lord finally came to receive His original throne, a number of people plotted to kill Him and take His throne back for themselves. Our Lord tells us about this attempted coup d'├ętat in the "Parable of the Tenants" in Matthew 21:33-41. In verse 38 we hear,
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.' So, they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
This passage, along with Psalm 2 and the entire Bible tell the same storyline we see in this current political season of world politics. The world does not want God or Jesus ruling anything. Nothing has changed in 2000 years. It turns out this past election cycle has really been at its heart another conspiracy against God, the Bible, Jesus as King, the Constitution and our way of life. Again, it's not a new storyline. People want God out of America and are pushing for the global agenda in Psalm 2. Many people don't want or care about our National Motto "In God We Trust." That is true because the people on the potential winning side of this election are not concerned or troubled about the voting irregularities and massive, documented fraud going on now that is unprecedented in America history for a Presidential election. No, people just want the power of the office to run things on their own. They want to move on without God and His laws and build a "new world" of their own. They have no interest in God's anointed one, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Messiah and Lord of the Nations are totally unknown to them, an enemy if you will. Our Lord is in their way and this election has seemingly opened a fresh path for them and their fellow conspirators to take over the world if but for a short time.

Now like everything in life, the results of this election are going somewhere. Reality is not a static thing. Each of us is older this year than last. Reality operates within a deeper framework of God's sovereign purposes that were planned out and designed before the world existed. So, this election is taking us somewhere. It is moving us to the Book of Revelation where all conspiracies in Psalm 2 that deal with rejecting God's rule over the world must end...and they do! In Revelation 20:11-15 the Lord gathers all the nations that tried to conspire against His loving rule over the world throughout the ages to a final judgment.
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Final judgment is not a popular topic today, even in the Church world. Most professing Christians has never even heard a sermon on this topic in their lives. The fear of the Lord is gone from our society today and we seem to be living under the spell of leaders and politicians that operate as though God does not exist. This last election was potentially won by individuals that never once mentioned God in any speech or public platform. But if God is gone from our world and humanity tries to replace God, then Psalm 2 and the coming conspiracy must be fulfilled. There are no other options.

This past election is also a powerful reminder to all of us that we too have been a part of this rebellion against the Lord. All of us have sinned and tried to run our lives without God. All of us at one time thought we were as smart as that child with a squirt gun trying to put out the Sun. We all had a plan for life; we too had a vision for how to live and what to do with our lives. As a pastor, I have talked with hundreds of people whose plans for life failed miserably. By God's grace, some of those people woke up and realized they needed God to run their lives. They came to their senses like the "Prodigal Son" in Luke 15. They finally went home in search of their Heavenly Father and found that warm welcome home we all need.

Right now, tonight, there are millions of people who believe some false delusion that some flawed person is going to be their new President and change the world for the good. They have come to believe that the world is heading to some new, amazing beginning of a slice of "heaven on earth." But the Bible tells us that without the Lord Jesus Christ as the world's rightful King, without a payment for our sin and resurrection hope for the future, the world must be heading toward the battle of Armageddon in Revelation 16:16 and the close of this present age. In His great love for this fallen world, our Lord Jesus is still calling out to this sinful world to find His grace, His Gospel, His love and be saved. As we enter another Advent season, the Christ Child still wants this beautiful world to know that the best and most joyous time of holiday celebrations unfolding in this next month are all about Him and the joy, peace, hope and love He freely offers to all in His birth as our King.
